As Goddess Parvati united with Lord Shiva on
Teej, the occasion is celebrated by Hindus
every year. The occasion is also celebrated
to welcome monsoon, during the month of
July-August, also known as ‘Saawan’. The
festival is celebrated by women. They wear
colorful bandhani’s (tie and dye material),
and beautify themselves like a new bride.
The women observe a fast for the day where
water intake is restricted. The fast kept
for the day, is broken at night with sweets
as the women sing, swing, and dance.
According to myths, on this day, Teej Mata
bestows unmarried girls with suitable
consorts, and married women pray to enjoy
nuptial bliss. Married women pray for long
lives of their spouses.
Exchange of sweets and gifts take place on
the occasion. Mainly, this is done by
in-laws, where the betrothed receives gifts
and sweets from them. And married women
receive these offerings from parents.
The city at the day is lively with the
markets adorned with decorative and lights,
offering a spectacular view. The markets are
flooded with mouth watering chaats and
sweets. Sweet shops showcase their exquisite
preparations. One of them is called Ghewar,
delightfully.
Splendiferous and grand procession ensues on
the occasion. The effigy of Teej Mata,
beautifully adorned with jewelry attracts
during the procession. The procession
consists of the brass bands making some
melodious harmony with beautifully decorated
animals and caparisoned horses and
elephants. Chariots and palanquins add that
extravagance to the procession too.
