Palace on Wheels or shall we say, ‘Paradise
on Wheels’!! This train is an exquisite and
beautiful one with an everlasting
experience. The train offers tours that
include visits to heritage and culture of
the splendid cities of Rajasthan.
Nevertheless, the key attraction of an eight
days tour is Jaipur, the capital city, the
first stoppage of the tour.
One can easily feel the grandeur of the
Maharajas who once lived here. The train
itself is a great place to cherish and
reflects the Rajput hospitality at its best.
The experience is one-of-its-kind as one can
see and adore so many diversities of various
cities within few days. There is an
opportunity to visit the beautiful monuments
and palaces of erstwhile royal cities of
Rajasthan too.
The train started on 26th January 1982, and
is totally based on the theme of royal
culture and heritage and then equipped with
the latest technology to fulfill each desire
of its prestigious guests. There is a
popular saying in Rajasthan that ‘guests are
equivalent to God’ which is so rightly said
and proved. The train is amongst the ten
best trains all over the world.
Palace on Wheels consists of 14 well
furnished coaches which are named after
former states of Rajputana. The train is
even famous for its restaurants namely ‘The
Maharani’ and’ The Maharaja’ that serve all
kinds of cuisines, specializing in royal
Rajasthani cuisines. The royalty is
incomplete without liqueur. The train has a
lavish bar that is stocked nicely, and an
inbuilt lounge that enhances the facilities
in the train.
The eight-day tour route shows the train
departing from New Delhi and during its tour
it travels around Rajasthan with stoppages
at Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Sawai
Madhopur, Chittaurgarh, Udaipur, Bharatpur,
and Agra.
Jaipur is the first stoppage as the train
reaches on the second day i.e. on Thursday
at 02.00 hrs, and departs at 19.30 hrs. The
tour throughout the city comprises of: the
first visit at Hawa Mahal (Palace of Wind),
then Amber Fort.
After this, you are taken to the colorful
and lively markets for shopping in Jaipur.
Including a visit to Rajasthali (Rajasthan
Government’s Handicraft Emporium) the tour
proceeds for lunch that takes place at the
Palace Hotel. The tour continues after lunch
and now the visit is towards the royal City
Palace that is still the residence of the
royal family.
The next stop is Jantar Mantar (the renowned
observatory), and then you are back to
Palace on Wheels and can enjoy dinner
onboard as the train departs for the next
destination.
The itinerary of the tour has been modified.
Without removing any cities, the stoppage of
the tour has been changed:
Delhi - Jaipur - Sawai Madhopur -
Chittorgarh - Udaipur - Jaisalmer - Jodhpur
- Bharatpur - Agra - Delhi
A new train, ‘Royal Palace on Wheels’ has
also been started from September 2009. The
train provides an experience of contemporary
