Jaipur Foot is a renowned one for its
facilitation in changing lives of many
physically challenged people worldwide. The
development of the Jaipur Foot proved to be
a remarkable triumph in the history of
prosthetic foot. A prosthetic foot is an
artificial limb, which is located for
replacing the missing extremity.
Jaipur Foot was developed in 1968, which was
then carried forward by the Bhagwan Mahaveer
Viklang Sahayata Samiti for social cause, in
1975. Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata
Samiti has been working for humanitarian
purposes from many years.
One thought of prosthetic foot has changed
the lives of many families. A person who is
physically challenged suffers along with the
family, in almost every field of life. Such
helpless people are being aided by the
Samiti. This social organization provides
artificial limbs, wheelchairs, crutches,
calipers, hand-paddled tricycles, ambulatory
aids, and other aids and pieces of
equipments to physically challenged people,
free of cost.
As per the research done under the direction
of Goutam Reddy, Massachusetts Institute of
Technology, “The Jaipur Foot is low-cost,
durable, waterproof, and can be used with or
without shoes. Jaipur Foot, named after the
place where it was designed, is flexible
along multiple axes, which allows natural
movement of the foot. The Jaipur Foot
technology is based on traditional craft
using small local production methods. It has
already helped over 900,000 amputees in
developing and landmine-affected countries.”
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology
has joined hands with the organization of
Jaipur Foot. Jaipur Foot organization, fits
the largest amount of prosthetic foots in
the world. The organization has sixteen
branches for Limb/Caliper making, and 9
Permanent Satellite centers. It has done
foot fitments in 22 foreign countries.
The thought of creating Jaipur Foot was
first contemplated by Mr. Ram Chandra Sharma
who devised and developed the limb and the
foot. These limbs are manufactured keeping
in view, all factors such as cost,
flexibility etc. It is manufactured with
such a technology that it resembles almost
like natural limb.
The limb is so efficient that a person can
walk like a normal person and sit in a cross
legs position. It helps them to go back to
their jobs and earn for their families.
