Holi is celebrated all over the country with
full joy and enthusiasm. The festival
majorly consists of colors and sweets.
People celebrate it by playing with colors
with each other. The joy of the day is so
overwhelming that it gets difficult to
recognize faces after a while.
The celebration is of two days, ‘Choti Holi’
and ‘Dhulandi’. Choti Holi is celebrated a
day before Holi (Dhulandi). A huge camp fire
is held, according to the traditions and
this camp fire is called ‘Holika Dehen’.
According to legends, there was a king named
‘Hiranyakashyap’, a non-believer in God. He
forced his people to worship him as their
God, as he had magical powers. However, his
son ‘Prahlad’ came up as an immense believer
of God. Therefore, the cruel father tried to
get rid of his son. Holika (the sister of
Hiranyakashyap, who had the power to resist
fire) made one of the efforts to harm
Prahlad. She sat along with Prahlad in a
burning pyre.
Shockingly, Holika died and the boy remained
safe. This was reckoned as the triumph of
bad over evil. Representatively, this day is
celebrated every year by burning similar
pyres all over the country. The first day
symbolizing evil, blazing up with the fire,
the next day of Dhulandi is celebrated.
People rejoicingly throw colors at each
other, share sweets, and pay visits at each
other’s places.
In Jaipur, during Holi, Elephant Festival is
organised. Natives and travelers from all
over the globe come to Jaipur and celebrate
this festival at Chaugan Stadium. The
program is very captivating and attracts
many visitors with the elephant polo, tug of
war, and a beauty pageant of elephants
enchanting every spectator.
