The hottest tourist destination in the
world “THE PINK CITY”!!
Jaipur is a delight for tourists. The forts,
monuments, and temples here are so
exquisite. Jaipur is renowned for its
culture and heritage. Its history is unique,
being the first planned city of India.
In the year 1097 AD, a man named Dulaha Raya
(the bridegroom prince), came from Gwalior,
and founded the Jaipur state. The
‘Kachhawaha’ and his kinsmen drove away the
local Meenas and the Bargujar Rajput chiefs
by treachery. Dulaha Raya was a Kachhawaha
hero of the ‘sun-born dynasty’, memorialized
in Ramayana. However, the erstwhile capitals
of Kachhawahas were Dausa, then Jamwa
Ramgarh, then Amber, and then finally Jaipur.
The princely Jaipur State was renamed as ‘Jaipur’,
after its creator and warrior king Sawai Jai
Singh II. Sawai Jai Singh II, felt the need
to shift his capital city to Jaipur from
Amber, due to increase in population and
insufficiency of water.
Jaipur came to existence on early 18 cen. by
Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. Jai Singh II
was a Kachhwaha Rajput, who reigned from
1699-1744. An extremely gifted ruler–
intellectually and politically, amongst the
warriors, he was famous as the
warrior-astronomer. In 1696, Emperor
Aurangzeb conferred the title of 'Sawai' on
him. ‘Sawai’ stand 'One and a Quarter'
(intelligence), everybody was impressed by
his wit and courage. The title was proudly
accepted by all of Jai Singh's descendants.
Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, a noted
architect, patronized the designing of the
city. Jaipur was found as the new location
for his kingdom. He appointed Vidyadhar
Bhattacharya as the chief architect to
sketch the designs. The city is laid out as
per Shilpa-Shastra, which is an ancient
Hindu essay on architecture. Each street
faced towards east as per the Shilpa-Shastra.
Division of the city was done in nine
blocks, where two blocks encompassed palaces
and buildings, and the rest seven blocks
were for public. The seven blocks were
further planned in a grid system with
straight wide alleyway, lined with trees,
and the palace set on the northern side. In
order to ensure security, giant
reinforcement of walls named ‘Parkota’ was
made, along with seven potent gates. The
architecture of the town was the finest in
India.
Pink City is situated at a distance of 262
km. In 1876, the city was shaded with pink
on the juncture of Prince of Wales’ visit.
The entire city was painted pink to give it
fairy finesse. And till date, the color of
the capital city is pink and it fascinates
the guests with its vivid charisma. The
specific color suits the best as it does not
reflect the glare of scorching sun rays.
Rapid development altogether, made Jaipur
prosperous. The early twentieth century
Jaipur saw many hospitals, industries and
useful institutions in the city. The leading
business of metals and marbles was endorsed
by school of art which was set up in 1868.
Jaipur's initial colleges saw three of them
named Sanskrit college (1865), Girls school
(1867), constructed by Maharaja Sawai Ram
Singh II.
Besides, the wealthy community such as
Jain’s and Marwari’s also existed. Today,
the population of Jaipur has reached to 4
million. Pink City is the prime location for
tourists.
