Gaitore is an embodiment of magnificence,
belonging to the lives of the royal
families. Not only a splendid life, but the
lavishness escorts after death also. This
monument encompasses several regal and very
enchanting cenotaphs (chattri).
Gaitore as a mesmerizing monument was
established for the purpose of cremation of
royal people. Each chhatri was built as a
memorial for each king, queen, and prince,
who passed away.
Gaitore comes at a distance of 15 km from
Jaipur and is placed on Jaipur-Amber
highway. Gaitore is believed to be a
disrupted form of the Hindi phrase `Gaye ka
Thor` meaning `resting place of the departed
souls`.
These cenotaphs are beautifully carved in
typical architectural forms. Good quality of
marble and red stone is carved in such a
manner that each chhatri or cenotaph seen in
Gaitore is exclusive and diverse from
others. The main attraction amongst all of
them is the one that was made for Maharaja
Sawai Jai Singh II. The cenotaph made in
memories of Sawai Jai Singh II is very
alluring. This imperial chhatri portrays
twelve beautifully carved pillars.
The grand sized chhatri of Sawai Jai Singh
II is made of white marble, and is
astoundingly carved. Along with the kings’
and the princes’, the memorials of queens’
were also built in the form of striking
cenotaphs.
‘Maharani Ki Chhatri’ compound embraces the
cenotaphs made in remembrance of the royal
ladies. The departed souls of the royal
queens rest here in Gaitore.
This marvelous architectural structure named
Gaitore embodies an amalgamation of
Rajasthani and Islamic forms of
constructions. This beautiful dwelling place
of royal departed souls is worth a site.
