The town has been holding a lot of
architecture of medieval era, and has been a
spectator of many historical events. As per
Mahabharata, the Pandavas spent one last
year of their exile at Bairath. Bairath also
has some remains of the Mauryan Empire with
traces of Buddhism.
Earlier known as Viratnagar, there are few
monuments which stand from centuries. The
Buddhist monastery was established in 634
A.D. as per historical records, and there
are several other monuments with great
architecture and a story behind each. The
ruin of the Mughal Empire, in the form of a
mint, is still present there. Old Mughal
gardens can still be seen with painted ‘chattris’.
Moreover, Bairath is an ancient town of
Rajasthan which has some valuable
archaeological places such as Bhim-Ki-Dungri
and Bijak-ki-Pahari.
Bhim-Ki-Dungri, also known as Pandu Hill, is
said to be the place where Bhim (one of the
Pandavas) lived. It is a hill with a low,
undulating cave. Bijak-ki-Pahari is a
granite elevation with remains of once
flourishing Buddhist monasteries of the
times of Huen Tsang, who came to India in
634 A.D.
Till today, the Banganga Fair is conducted
with lots of excitement and celebration.
Held during the months of April to May, a
full moon day during Vaishakh is chosen for
this annual fair. With a strong belief of
purifying one’s own soul, the fair takes
place near a rivulet. The rivulet is as far
as 18 km from Bairath from the Radha -
Krishna Ji Temple. Moreover, the temple is
200 years old which records visits of
pilgrims from all over the country. One can
pay homage to other shrines such as Hanuman
and Ganga Bihari, Math of Goswamiji, and the
Mahadev Temple.
Bairath is situated at a distance of about
86 km on Shahpura-Alwar Road. The trip to
the place becomes a pleasure when planned
during winters. Several tour planners always
help out with tourist visits and their stay
there.
